Welcome to Thomas Mitchell Primary School.

Our school motto 'Exploring Together' epitomises our beliefs that students, teachers, staff and parents seek the best education for all children by providing a friendly, safe, nurturing environment.

We welcome children into a safe and richly diverse learning community that is united in the pursuit of educational excellence. Each child is recognised as an individual, and will be nurtured and guided to achieve his or her potential through lifelong learning and personal growth.

Thomas Mitchell Primary School opened in 1991, and is located in the south-eastern suburb of Endeavour Hills.  Our school community has become more diverse and now includes students from over 70 countries, with no particulary dominant nationality.  65% of the students at the school have a language background other than English (EAL).

Our school's framework and statements of philosophy and objectives provide a strong basis for ongoing school improvement.

Thomas Mitchell Primary School is committed to providing inter-cultural experiences for our students and this commitment is reflected throughout the school.

A comprehensive and enriching learning environment is provided for all students.  The curriculum is based on the Victorian Curriculum and Learning Standards with a priority on English and Mathematics.  The classroom curriculum is complimented by specialist programs in Science, Visual Arts, Physical Education, Languages - Indonesian and Mandarin, Music/Singing, EAL - English as an Additional Language and an Enrichment program in English and Mathematics.  We also provide intervention programs for students who require additional support in the key areas of reading and mathematics.

At Thomas Mitchell Primary School, you will be encouraged to participate in the education of your children.  We believe that children develop more meaningful and positives attitudes to school and learning when parents and teachers work as a cooperative team to ensure the very best of education outomes for our students.

We encourage you to:-

  • Come up to school and speak to the teachers about any concerns or queries you may have.
  • Become involved in the School Council (the policy making body of the school). Elections are held in March each year,
  • Join the Parents' Club.  Meeting times are advertised in the newsletter.
  • Come into the classrooms and work with the teachers and children.
  • Share your child's enthusiasm for learning both in and out of school.

Like all facets of society, school has changed greatly in the past few years. At Thomas Mitchell Primary School, we have retained good traditional education and combined this with well researched modern approaches, where each child is treated as an individual, and is expected to progress at their own rate. Teachers will negotiate with each child their learning in the key areas of - English, Mathematics, Science and Technology, The Arts, Sport and Physical Education, Humanities, and Indonesian and Mandarin as Languages Other Than English.

On behalf of the staff, I look forward to sharing an enjoyable and exciting time with you as your children develop a love of learning and an understanding of cooperation and citizenship at Thomas Mitchell Primary School.
